Sgt Pepper’s Influence Keeps Marching On….

Inspiration takes many forms. If you’re a dad, it may simply be from watching your kids and striving to do better for them, or watching their childhood and whisking back in time to your own to get all nostalgic.

You may still be a b-boy at heart, inspired by the original (and best!) tunes from whichever era you claim as your own, or still sketch your name in ‘graf’ on a post-it note during a meeting instead of on a school exercise book cover.

What’s the point? That music and art can leave indelible impressions on you that can shape you, and inspire you.

One of the most culturally recognisable pairings of art & music has to be Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band and Sir Peter Blake’s iconic cover. 50 years old? It’s (just about) older than me.

Whether you were (are) a Stones or Beatles fan (er, both actually) there’s no doubt as to its enduring power. It’s been ‘homaged’ to death and even has a ton of conspiracy theories still floating around it. Its impact can’t be understated.

Which leads us to Shoreditch. A cultural cauldron of art, music, fashion, tech, beards, beer and the rest, simmering away, night and day. The Book Club was the scene for the launch of an exhibition of bold, colourful prints attended by bold, colourful characters. They provide excellent drinks and a constantly changing art programme. Thinking and drinking. A heady cocktail.

‘Reverberation’ is a new and unique body of work created by legendary Photographer-Director Dean Chalkley and Creative Director Ciaran O’Shea from studio Discordo. They even roped in their friends (‘A little help from my friends’) to be subjects.

It’s interesting to play a guessing game as to which image corresponds to which Sgt Pepper song. 13 Tracks, 13 images. Or, you could grab a daddy juice and just appreciate the art in its full glory.

The images themselves are abstract, bold and have a piercing presence as they singe your synapses. A walk round won’t take too long (ideal if you have any of the lil ‘uns with you) but is definitely a destination if you’re in the capital.

Why not combine it with the Basquiat exhibition for a fantastic (family?) day out. There’ll be absolutely no chance of being uninspired. Trust us.

‘Reverberation’ is a free exhibition running at The Book Club in Shoreditch from 7th September until 5th November 2017

The Book Club, 100 – 106 Leonard Street, London EC2A 4RH
